This is a test to see if anyone reads the newsletter…
Many of you are crossword aficionados who probably enjoy collective nouns. A couple of my favourites are a shrewdness of apes and a bask of crocodiles.
What are some possible collective nouns for a group of bridge players? Chocolate may be awarded to an entertaining answer.

Wednesday Night Bridge
This is where you can play teams tactics as a pair rather than Matchpoint, as your score is calculated against the average across the whole field. This means that the odd overtrick is not as important. You do not need to form a team for this event or to register, just turn up on the night.
Our next Pizza/Lecture night will be Wednesday night 5th September when Richard Hills will be talking about simple squeeze plays.
Canberra in Bloom
Mt Kilimanjaro and MS
Thanks to the generosity of CBC members and the extraordinary efforts and thoughtfulness of Tim Mather, the club has raised over $2100 through this project.
Tim’s post-climb story is now available for reading on the website – including video taken during his climb.
Reflections on Speed of Play
As players we all have different views on what is a comfortable pace of play. Let’s be considerate if some players are slower than they used to be. And let’s remember that newer players face a baptism of fire when they start playing in regular duplicate sessions; the more experienced can smooth their path. Bear in mind that directors have the difficult job of trying to balance the needs of individual players with the needs of the group as whole, so help them in any way you can.
Count your winners and count your losers. If the total doesn't come to 13, count your cards.
An elderly gentleman goes to the Doctor for his annual check-up.
The Doctor is impressed that this man is in even better health that he was the year before.
Curious, he asks him what he does for mental stimulation.
The man answers that he plays duplicate bridge.
The doctor, a bridge player, tells him that's great. "And what do you do for physical stimulation?"
''I sit East-West" is the reply.
Do you have a hand that illustrates something clever or something amusing?

Bicycle security – CBC in want of a U-Bolt
It’s great to have a number of members cycling to the Club – healthy and relieving pressure on car parking spaces! However, there are some concerns about the security of bicycles outside the Club, even with basic chains. If anyone has a U-Bolt they do not need, and would like to donate to the Club for use on premise by those cycling to the Club, it would be greatly appreciated.

Dear Hilda Lirsch,
The North-South cards are:
Is 6NT a slam dunk for North-South?
Womble of Wimbledon
Yes and No.
If North declares 6NT, and the opening lead from East is a ♠, and West holds the K♠, then 6NT is down one.
But if South is declarer in 6NT the location of the K♠ does not matter, so the contract is always cold.
The importance of a partnership correctly positioning declarer more frequently occurs when they are moseying towards 3NT.
