Dear Hilda Lirsch,

Pard opens the bidding with 1♣, and RHO overcalls 1NT. When should I double 1NT for penalties as opposed to bidding game in 3NT?

Best wishes,
Four-Ex

  • §§§§

Dear Four-Ex,

This is a matter of simple mathematics. It is easier to win seven or eight tricks defending 1NTx that it is to win nine tricks declaring 3NT.

Best wishes,
Hilda
