From the President:

A good week for the club: our volunteer dealers have been working hard and some of our members have been playing well in Sydney (see below).

Best wishes,

Pam

Vale

Peter Von Der Pahlen died in Spain recently. He was a keen member of the Canberra Bridge community in the 1970’s when he was at the Finnish Embassy. He met his wife Beverley here. One of our trophies carries their name.

Old Club Photographs

Do you have an old photo of our Club’s building before the extension was added? This would be approximately between 1975-1981. If so, please contact John Brockwell who is looking for a photo for historical purposes, which he could scan a copy of.

Facebook Advertising – ABF Newsletter

Canberra Bridge Club received favourable mentions in the recent ABF newsletter and ABF Marketing newsletter for our Facebook promotion of our last course of Beginners lessons.

Scam emails: ‘Your personal data is threatened’

Sometimes it can be hard to know whether an email is real or fake, and whether or not you need to be concerned or just delete it. Recently we received a scam email with the subject line “Be sure to read this message! Your personal data is threatened!” and would like to take this opportunity to warn members that it is 100% a fake scam email, and do not respond to it or follow their ‘instructions’ if you receive emails like this one. Emails which claim to have ‘hacked’ your email account because of it sending ‘from’ your email address are not real. There are simple ways to make an email look like it was sent from a different address to what is real. Never give out your details or pay a “ransom” in response to these emails.

Renewing membership – new bank account

As the end of the year approaches, our Membership year comes to an end on 31st December and emails for renewals will be sent out. Please note that this year the Club has a new bank account, and the BSB and account number for direct deposits has changed. If you renew by direct deposit, please ensure to check and update our bank account details that will be included on the renewals email.

Perfume

A friendly reminder to please not wear perfume whilst at the Club, as some members have serious allergic/asthma reactions.  We have had two incidents this month alone, and would appreciate everyone’s continual assistance with this recurring problem.

If you have a garden of Spring flowers we would love some bunches to brighten up the room. We would be grateful if you could bring them to the Club on Monday 4 November. Any donations of treats for morning tea on race day would also be greatly appreciated.

Lighter Moments

A grandfather heard his son explaining to his children aged 9 and 8 that the plant growing in the garden was a cactus. He added that if there are two or more such plants we call them cacti.

The 2 year-old, wide eyed, looked up to ask ‘When did the cat die?'
