Lessons

From the President:

Our Valentine’s Day Congress on Sunday 9 February is only a week away. Avoid the heat and the smoke and enjoy a pleasant day of bridge with some socialising – please enter as soon as possible. Details below.

Best wishes,

Pam

Session Starting Times

Could members please be at the club at least 10 minutes before the start of play as this assists the director in setting up the movement.

Library

Club members will be aware that we have been doing some work on our library. Ella Beer has been sorting the collection, discarding books that are very old, damaged or dirty so that we have some space for more attractive titles. If you have some recent books, fiction or general non-fiction, that are in good condition, we would love to give them a new home.

Please leave your donations in the box provided or give them to the managers.

Metal name badges

Another batch of metal name badges will be ordered soon. If you would like to get one, please contact Kerry or Emily in the office to add you to the list for this order. The badges cost $15, and must be paid for before ordering.

Watering

One of the very necessary jobs in the club, increasingly so, is watering our plants. We appreciate Gordon McAlary, who does this superbly on Mondays. Is there someone who could do this before or after they play on Thursdays?

Lucky Draws for Cinema Tickets 3rd-8th Feb

Our directors will be doing a Lucky Draw at each of our 10 sessions this coming week, for a pair of tickets to an advance screening of “The Professor and the Madman” at Palace Electric on Wednesday 12 February at 6.30pm.

Check out the trailer on YouTube. In cinemas February 20.

To be in the draw, all you need to do is be a financial member of the Club and come along to play at one of our sessions next week!

The Professor and the Madman

Based on the worldwide best-selling novel by Simon Winchester, THE PROFESSOR AND THE MADMAN is an extraordinary true tale of madness, genius, and obsession about two remarkable men who created history with the writing of the Oxford English Dictionary.

The compilation of the Oxford English Dictionary began in 1857 and was one of the most ambitious, and revolutionary projects ever undertaken. Professor James Murray (Mel Gibson) took on the challenge of creating the most comprehensive dictionary ever compiled, but knew that it would take him and his team over a century to compile all known definitions. However, by “crowd sourcing” the work, that is, by enlisting definitions from people all over the world, the dictionary could be compiled in mere decades.

As definitions were collected, the overseeing committee, led by Professor Murray, discovered that one man, Dr. W.C. Minor (Sean Penn), had submitted more than ten thousand words. When the committee insisted on honoring him, a shocking truth came to light: Dr. Minor, an American Civil War veteran, was a convicted murderer and being held at an asylum for the criminally insane.
