Message from the President

Don’t forget this coming Wednesday 27 November after the morning session we will be putting up the Christmas tree and decorating the Club in readiness for the festive season! So, if you have some spare time and would like to help, please arrive at the Club after the morning session (around 1:30pm). As I said last week, any help is great and is always very much appreciated 😊
ABF Playoffs
To answer questions from the members as to what was happening this week, the Club rents out the Olive Lott room (and on occasion the Barry Turner room) to outside clients, one of which is the Australian Bridge Federation (ABF). This past week the ABF held the 2025 Open Australian Team Playoffs at the Club and seven teams were competing for the chance to represent Australia at the 2025 World National Teams Championship in August next year. For those interested in the results you can find them here https://www.bridgeaustralia.org/resultslistbyheadevent.asp?umbid=451
(In two weeks’ time the ABF will be back again for 2025 Mixed Australian Team Playoffs).

Kieser's Exercise Physiologist will be running a 1-hour balance and bone loading exercise class at the Canberra Bridge club for all wanting to join.
The class will include different exercise stations with multiple levels of difficulty and high supervision from exercise professionals.
This class will aim to improve quality of bones to make them stronger with light impact exercise and increase stability for falls prevention with balance exercises.

John Brockwell's Column

Bad language

At a Gold Coast Congress long ago, two young things (let’s call them Paula and Diana) were playing against two elderly Jewish gentlemen, neither of whom knew that Paula was of Jewish extraction.

Mid-game, Paula (South) opened 1NT, pass from West, 3NT from Diana, all pass.  West had no attractive lead against the uninformative auction.  While he was contemplating, his partner (East) murmured in Yiddish ‘Lead a heart’.  Whereupon, Paula turned to West and said, also in Yiddish, ‘If you lead a heart, I’ll call the Director’.
