Information about the CBCPay system

The Canberra Bridge Club uses CBCPay as the payment method for members to pay for table money. A CBCPay account is created for new members as soon as they join the club (and after they have been allocated an ABF number if they don’t already have one)

Once a CBCPay account has been created, all future playing fees (including one day congress events) will be debited to the member’s account.

CBC Pay is a pre-payment system, so members are kindly requested to direct deposit funds into the club’s bank account for future table money fees.

In deciding how much to direct deposit, we are most anxious to reduce the administrative load for the managers and request that each member deposits sufficient funds into the account to cover to at least one and preferably up to three months projected playing fees.

When making the direct deposit for CBCPay please write in the reference area - CBCPay and the member’s ABF number

For security reasons we do not publish our account details online - please obtain them at the club from the Director or via email to This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.

When a CBCPay member plays at the club, they simply write CBCPay on the table envelope.

All members will receive, by email, a monthly statement that will show details of deposits made into CBCPay and payments deducted when the member played at the club for the previous month.

Shared Balances

To further reduce the administrative workload, CBCPay can establish a shared balance for couples. Monthly email statements will show each member’s playing history. Linked accounts can be established by asking the Director.

Online, Master the Basics and Lessons

CBCPay is also used for payment when attending a Master the Basics sessions on Thursday mornings, either via zoom or at the clubrooms and will also apply for payment of Kantar lessons.

FAQs

Can I use a cheque to pay or top up my CBCPay balance?

For members who do not use internet banking, the club is happy to accept cheques, covering at least ten future games. The cheque needs to be placed in the table envelope with a BIG (highlighted) note on the envelope.

I don't use internet banking, but I regularly go to the bank to do my banking...

You are also able to visit a bank branch of your banking institution and request that money be transferred to the club’s bank account. Our bank account name is under "Canberra Bridge Club" and is a Westpac account. Please obtain the bank details from the Director or via email to This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. .  In the reference field they may not allow Letters (CBCPay), if that is the case, please make sure to still use your ABF Number as the reference so we can identify who has paid us.

If paying by in-bank transfer, we strongly encourage you to either email us to let us know that the deposit is for CBCPay, and/or bring the physical receipt to the Club for our reference.

I can't internet bank - how else can I pay?

A few members cannot internet bank, in which cases a special arrangement can be made. However, you need to discuss this with Ian Robinson (Chief Director) or one of our Managers (Kerry or Emily). If you attend a session when neither is available, please email us at This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.

What happens if my balance goes negative?

CBCPay allows for negative balances, so lack of funds will not prevent a member from playing in a session. Members are asked to top up low balances after receiving the monthly statement.

How does a non-member visitor pay when I play with them on RealBridge or at the club?

For visitors to the club, the member has the option of paying for their visitor using their CBCPay account (please make a BIG highlighted note on the table envelope). Alternatively, the club will accept exact cash or can arrange a direct deposit.

Can I withdraw my money if I stop playing at the club?

All monies deposited into CBCPay are refundable on request.

How does payment for substitutes in club competition events work?

It is the responsibility of the member using a substitute to make sure the substitute is aware that table money for the session will be charged to the substitute’s CBCPay account and not to the member’s account. If the member wishes to pay for the substitute, they should make prior arrangements by emailing the club.

For First Timers

RealBridge improves the online Bridge experience by using your computer camera and microphone, allowing you to see and hear each other at a virtual bridge table. If you haven't already, we encourage you to join in one of our free Taster Sessions to familiarise yourself with the RealBridge Online Platform.

To start playing RealBridge you will need to:

  1. Confirm that your device will work with RealBridge (note: if using an iPad / iPad Mini, please use either Chrome or Firefox browsers. Older Safari browsers are not supported).
  2. Participate with your partner in a 30-minute taster and familiarisation session (recommended, not required)
  3. Click the link for the relevant session.
  4. Review the etiquette for playing on RealBridge

If you have non-urgent problems with using RealBridge, please contact John Donovan - Email: This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.
For urgent problems using RealBridge (e.g. signing in to a session), you may phone Bruce Crossman (phone number available in the Pianola member directory).

An excellent explanation of the RealBridge process is available on Realbridge Online website. Go "How To ..." which is the 6th heading on the top bar and look at the player guide in the drop down menu

30 Minute "Taster" sessions

We are moving to an on demand system. Members wishing to experience RealBridge for the first time can email the club via This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.

RealBridge uses your camera and microphone allowing you to see and hear each other.

In the meantime, check your Camera and Microphone, so your partner and opponents can "see and hear" each other.

Table Money on RealBridge

  • The cost of playing a session of RealBridge is $8 per player with concessions ($7 / $4 students).
  • All session fees are collected through CBCPay. Visitors are charged to their member-partner.
  • Practice/taster sessions are free.

System Summary on RealBridge for competition players

In Face to Face events all players are expected to have a system card available for inspection by their opponents.

In RealBridge players can post a quick system description in the chat box on the right of the RealBridge screen.

Process:

Save a brief summary of your system and carding in a text editor or word document (no need to align the formatting with the RB chat box)

Before the start of play, open the document, highlight the summary and click copy.

At the beginning of each match or round, simply paste the summary onto the chat box (The format will automatically align for you). The copy function will retain the summary until you copy something else, so can be used multiple times

The latest release of iOS – version 15 – causes problems when playing on RealBridge. RealBridge have a recommended solution to these problems. If you have iOS 15, please do follow RealBridge’s advice. If you don’t, you are likely to experience freezing or loss of audio during a session.

If you have an iPad with iOS 15, and you have not already updated your iPad as recommended by RealBridge on 8 December, there is a settings change that you should make.

RealBridge are very happy to talk you through the procedure. You can contact them on the number above.

Windows 7

Please contact This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. . We will advise you about how to solve this problem.

RealBridge etiquette – some pointers

Think about RealBridge as playing at the clubrooms... At the clubrooms you would not:

  • Eat or drink in full view of the rest of the table (but you might discreetly eat a peanut or take a sip of wine)
  • Conduct a conversation with a family member or conduct a telephone conversation
  • Get up during the hand and make coffee unless you are Dummy and first excuse yourself from the table.

Technical issues

The microphone is the greatest feature of Realbridge – it allows for normalisation of the bridge environment. However, it can also cause problems with feedback. Some suggestions:

  1. Play in a quiet environment away from kids, televisions, street noise and noisy pets.
  2. Turn off the microphone when there is a distraction – my dogs bark as the possum leaves the possum box each night.
  3. Set the microphone on the lowest possible  volume
  4. Regularly refresh the screen by clicking the wind symbol
  5. Be aware that the microphone may amplify noises, causing them to be louder than you realise for your partner and opponents.

If you need help with more significant issues you can email John Donovan This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. for advice.

New RealBridge Server in Australia

Recently RealBridge added a new server which is physically in Australia.  This is to improve performance, and to make the RealBridge experience better for all of us.

The new server is called oceania.realbridge.online.  In the links that we give you, you will see “oceania.realbridge.online”  instead of “play.realbridge.online”.

The first time that you play in a session on the new server, you will have to do three things:

 (1) When you first join a session on the new server, you may be prompted to authorise oceania.realbridge.online to use the camera and microphone, for example:

unnamed.png

If you get this message, you should click “Allow”. You should only have to do this once – after you have done it, your web-browser will remember the setting.

 (2) On the login screen your name [and id], will not be pre-populated. Enter your name [and id] in their correct form.  After you have done this, it will be saved for future sessions.

 (3) Your personal settings will have been set to the defaults.  That is, things like single-click or two-click mode, types of cards, orientation of dummy, etc.  To set these back to how  you like them:

- Sit at a table

- Click the Settings icon (shaped like a gear wheel)

- Change the settings

- Click OK

Again, you will only have to do this once.

We suggest that for your next session you should allow a few minutes extra for doing these.

Other notes

  • All sessions on RealBridge will earn ABF MasterPoints.
  • Partnership help: You can attend a session without a partner, and be matched to another player without a partner.
  • Members are welcome to invite ABF registered visitors (and international visitors) to play with them on RealBridge.
