CASUAL EMPLOYMENT OPPORTUNITY

The ABF and/or BFACT will be hosting a number of congresses in Canberra during 2025 and 2026. They all use coloured tablecloths owned by the ABF that require washing after each congress. We are looking for a person who would be willing to take on this task.
The congresses involved are:

  • 2025: October Canberra in Bloom
  • 2026: January Summer Festival of Bridge
  • July Australian National Championships
  • October Canberra in Bloom

Each congress is likely to result in approximately 100 to 150 tablecloths that will need laundering after the congress.
The tablecloths are approximately one metre square and made of cotton or cotton blend. I have found that about 15 can fit in a load in a family-sized washing machine. They need to be washed, dried, folded, sorted by colour and stacked into plastic tubs (that we will provide). They must not appear to be crushed, but with careful handling during the drying and folding process, they should require minimal ironing. This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.. The clean tablecloths would be returned to the ABF headquarters in Fyshwick. Arrangements can be made to assist with the collection and return of the tablecloths.
We are offering a laundering fee of $3 per tablecloth, including the cost of consumables such as laundry detergent. It is expected to result in a total payment of approximately $1200. Payment will be arranged by the convenor of the relevant congress on completion of each batch of tablecloths.

The task can be undertaken by anyone in the Canberra region with access to a washing machine – it does not have to be a bridge player. The only time constraint is that the tablecloths must be washed and returned ready for the next congress. It could suit a teenager looking for a paid activity in the school holidays. Please pass this information on to your relatives or friends who might welcome the additional income.

Expressions of interest should be emailed to me at This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it., giving your name, contact details and address. For those under 18, your age and parental consent is also required. You can phone me with any questions on 0402-077958.

Lighter Moments

  • What do you call a snapshot from the North Pole? A polaroid.
  • What is the Mexican dish that snowmen like? Burrr-ito.
  • What do the elves eat for lunch in the North Pole? Cold cuts and chilly.
  • Where does a snowman get the weather report? The winternet.
  • What's the weatherman's favorite food in winter? Brrr-itos!
  • Why did the husband pour warm water on his computer? He had asked his wife what to do if windows froze.
  • Why did the bear keep getting fired? He always disappeared in the winter.
  • What can you catch in the winter, even with your eyes closed? A cold.
  • What did the tree say after a long, cold winter? What a re-leaf!

Yes I know it has been cold here lately despite our new heaters. This week we've held a symposium here in the office and the heating controllers have now been exquisitely fine tuned. There should be marked improvement as of tomorrow! We have also called the technicians who installed our units back into the club for a check up that everything is running as it should, they will be here on Tuesday afternoon. So we are definitely hoping for a warmer clubroom but if you are skeptical (or not a new member to our club), it can't hurt to bring an extra jumper just in case.

Have a great week everyone and keep warm.
