Annual General Meeting

All members are invited to attend the Canberra Bridge Club AGM, which will be held in the clubrooms on Tuesday 13 October 2026 starting at 5.30pm.  Papers for the AGM are available on the website.

If possible, members are asked to submit their questions in advance of the AGM to This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it..  This will facilitate the provision of a complete answer at the AGM.

Election of 2026-2027 Committee

Vice President

The nomination received for the position of Vice President has been withdrawn.  Consistent with section 48(3) of the Constitution, the Chair will call for further nominations to fill the position of Vice President at the AGM.  Any nominations at the AGM will need to meet the requirements of section 48(4), eg:

  • Nominations will need to be supported by two other members, and the nominee will need to confirm that none of the grounds for disqualification (summarised in the nomination form available on the website) apply to them.
  • If the nominee or one or both of the members supporting the nomination will not be present at the AGM, the nomination can be submitted by completing the nomination form available on the website, including four actual signatures:
    • Completed nomination forms must reach the Chair before the commencement of the AGM, whether handed to the Chair personally or via the labelled box near the Manager’s office.
    • Alternatively, completed nomination forms can be emailed to This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. if they are scanned and included as an attachment and reach the Manager by 4.00pm on 13 October (if getting close to this time, it would be advisable to phone the office and check the Manager has received your email).

If more than one nomination for the position of Vice President is received at the AGM, a ballot will occur.

Treasurer and the five ordinary Committee member positions

Given the nominations received, there will be ballots at the AGM for the position of Treasurer and for the five ordinary Committee member positions.

Candidates involved in the two ballots have provided statements in support of their nominations.  These statements are available on the website.  Members are encouraged to read the statements before deciding how they will vote.

Other positions

In relation to each of the three other office-bearer positions on the Committee, one nomination only has been received:

  • President – Wendy Boxall
  • Secretary – Marianne Bookallil
  • Tournament Secretary – Rob Hurst

The full election results will be declared at the AGM and published in the newsletter of 15 October.

Proxy appointments

Members who are unable to attend the AGM may appoint another member as proxy to vote on their behalf.  Proxy forms are available on the website or from the Manager.  There is a box located near the Manager’s Office for completed proxy forms.

Please note that complete proxy forms must be submitted by 2.00 pm on Monday 12 October.  Proxy forms need to be checked and collated before the AGM.  Each form will then be given to the relevant proxy at the AGM.  A member must not be a proxy for more than five other members.

Proxy appointments can be emailed without the authorising member’s signature if the email is being sent by the authorising member to the Manager, received by the deadline, and all other relevant details as required on the proxy form are provided.

Please contact the Manager if you have already submitted a proxy form and wish to add or amend your voting instructions.

Canberra in Bloom Update

I have been telling absolutely everyone about it, so you should all have heard by now—Canberra in Bloom has happened!

I used to think event organisers had to do everything themselves, but it turns out my most important job was simply finding the right help—and that is the one thing I genuinely got right. I managed to bring in the perfect people for every task, and everyone I turned to went entirely above and beyond.

Of course, plenty of things went wrong behind the scenes. The delivery truck was late, the roof leaked, and the air conditioning suffered a breakdown leaving the downstairs crowd freezing while everyone upstairs was in a sauna! To all the players who kindly shared their sufferings but added, "I'm not complaining, you're doing great!"—thank you so much for your patience and good humour. There were a few other mishaps along the way too, but if you didn't notice them, I certainly won't admit to them here.

Honestly, the ultimate saving grace was the lolly jar and our fantastic team. The directors were veteran pros and knew exactly what to do, Wendy kept everything on track, and Jenny did an amazing job managing the substitute players who stepped in at a moment's notice. Of course, the players did their part beautifully, too. But absolutely none of this would have been possible if I didn't have the crew who carried all the boxes, set everything up, cleaned it up, and then set it up all over again. Thank you so much to everyone who did the heavy lifting before and after the event.

I also need to thank Roger Brake, who answered every single email and text promptly—all from his hospital bed. While I was running around like a headless chook, Roger was enduring what was probably the busiest hospital stay in history. (Roger, get well soon and the irony is not lost on me that almost every text message I sent you ended with, "Don’t worry about a thing, I got this covered..." followed immediately by, "...but can you please help?!" )

The most important thing was that CIB kicked off on Friday and ran all the way through to Monday—which was my personal measure of success. However, the measure of our club’s success is much greater. We had multiple winners across various competitions.

Huge congratulations to everyone who played so brilliantly (results listed below), with a special mention to our brave rookies. Finally, a big thank you to our volunteer photographer who did a brilliant job capturing the spirit of the event, just look at all those smiling faces!
