President's Message
This will be my last message until June following my return from walking the Larapinta Trail which runs the 231 kilometre length of the Western McDonnell ranges in the Northern Territory. I am using it to raise money for the CBC charity Radio 1RPH so please support me if you can. I will attempt to send photos if there is telephonic connection on the track.
Please thank Anne Fleming when you see her, for organising the Mentoring in May programme. Good luck to those participating I hope you really enjoy the experience.
I am told the pizza night on Wednesday evening was a great success with 11 tables playing duplicate and 3 in the supervised area.
See upcoming events section for the ABF's 2023 Australia Wide Teams Club Knockout and special selection opportunities!
Tim Mather
Our weekly sessions are almost the same as last week.
Mentoring in May
Please, please, please…. the program needs more mentors.
This year we have a greater number of beginner bridge players from supervised looking to be mentored. The Friday morning supervised class is an ideal time to mentor this cohort. Mentoring is a great way to grow the club. Rewarding for mentors and a great opportunity for mentees to improve, feel more confident and happier in their game. If you are free to mentor please think about it and contact Anne.
We also have some intermediate level bridge players looking to be mentored. Again consider this. If you keep forgetting to fill out the form just send me an email with your available times or text to Anne Fleming on 0410 650 906

Upcoming Events
2023 ABF Australia Wide Teams Club Knockout - the 2nd Annual Event
This is a monthly interclub competition on RealBridge between clubs around Australia. Starting in June, it runs for 6 months on the second Tuesday night of each month. Our club can enter one team in each of the following 4 divisions:
- Less than 50 masterpoints
- Less than 100 masterpoints

- Open
Last year CBC was very successful, taking out the <750 masterpoints event.
For the three restricted teams (<50, <100 and <750) please enter online. You can enter as a team or as a pair. If you enter as a pair the club will try and match you with team-mates. Entries close on 16th May. If we have more than one team, we will hold a runoff event on Real Bridge on Tuesday afternoon, 30th May (and if required 23rd May depending on the numbers of entries). Any number of team substitutes are permitted provided they fall within the requisite masterpoints.
The Open team will be selected via the Barry Turner Teams running on 3 Thursday nights starting 18th May.

Grapevine Email Discontinuation
We are advised that members with @grapevine.com.au, @grapevine.net.au and @homemail.com.au email addresses - services will cease from 31 May 2023. We would appreciate early advice on an alternative address from members. Many thanks to those who have already done so.
Lest We Forget - from Kemal Avci, our member at the Turkish Embassy
The heroism, gallantry and resolve of your soldiers in the intense battle of Gallipoli to follow earned the respect of our soldiers. Both of our countries lost many sons, to be buried side by side. Out of this tragedy of the many lives lost, a friendship has grown between our countries. On ANZAC day, Australians commemorate the sacrifices of the men and women who served their nations. For us, as Turkish people, ANZAC Day is not only a day to reflect and commemorate the lives sacrificed, but a day to celebrate the friendship forged between our countries.
I commemorate all the fallen in the Gallipoli War of Heroes
‘Those heroes that shed their blood and lost their lives ... You are now lying in the soil of a friendly country. Therefore rest in peace. There is no difference between the Johnnies and the Mehmets to us where they lie side by side here in this country of ours ... You, the mothers who sent their sons from faraway countries, wipe away your tears; your sons are now lying in our bosom and are in peace. After having lost their lives on this land they have become our sons as well.’
Lighter Moments
Why do mother kangaroos hate rainy weather?
- Because their kids have to play inside
What did the tree say to autumn?
- Leaf me alone
What did one autumn leaf say to another?
- I'm falling for you.
Good luck to everyone competing in Merimbula!
Be kind in all things
