Message from the Committee
Our sponsor Travel Associates Canberra have offered to conduct a promotion to support our Canberra Bridge Club members Zara Chowdhury and Diya Shah who are part of the 2025 Under 26 Women’s youth team who will be competing at the Transnational Youth Championships held in Poland in July 2024.
Travel Associates have offered a “Double Incentive Promotion” consisting a 2% incentive for all travel bookings made before the 30th April. This means if members identify themselves as CBC Members at time of initial consultation with Travel Associates, 2% of the value of the booking will be made available after the end of the promotion to put towards Zara and Diya’s travel costs. Member travel bookings will need to be paid in full by 30th April 2024.
If you are planning to travel soon please consider supporting our young players by using Travel Associates. They have branches in Manuka, Gungahlin, Belconnen and Macquarie.
Message from the office
- The directors need some time to work out the best movement and arrange the boards prior to each session. It would be helpful if all our members were to be seated at least 15 minutes before the start time.
- To all the people who logged on to RealBridge last week, thank you! Please continue to support our online bridge sessions by logging in when you have time, it really makes the whole experience much more enjoyable when a half table can be avoided or if a player doesn't turn up last minute but can be filled in.
Setting up your MyABF account.
For members who still haven’t set up their MyABF account, you will receive an email over the weekend with an invitation to join MyABF. This will give you a link to use which should make it easy – please have a try yourself and use your debit or credit card to deposit money into your account. If you are still having difficulty, there will be volunteers helping after each session for the next two weeks. Please bring a device (a tablet, ipad or laptop or at least a phone capable of receiving emails). It is also essential that you bring a credit or debit card so that money can be deposited into your account.
Refresher Course
Barb Toohey and Steve Geddes are running a series of Refresher courses this year, aimed at all players who need to brush up on some of the fundamentals of the game.
The first of the series is on Responses and Rebids on Tue March 5, followed by Understanding Reverses on March 6.
- Tue 5 March 10:45 -12:00
- Wed 6 March 1:45-3:00
This is walk in session with no need to prebook. The cost is $10.

Youth Day
The next Youth day with Will Jenner-O’Shea will be held on Sunday, 3 March from 11:00am - 1:00pm at the Canberra Bridge Club. If any members have children/grand-children/nieces/nephews who wish to learn to play bridge please let them know. These sessions are available to anyone under 30 for free. And, if there are “Youth” who are not too far on the other side of 30, please let them know as they will also be very welcome, and it’s always a fun time!
Immediately after the Youth finish on Sunday, the Club is running another advanced lesson on “Slam bidding using keycard and splinters” - from 1:30-4:00pm. The more experienced Youth players are very welcome to stay on for that lesson and may do so for no charge.

ACT Women's Selection Trials
This event selects 3 womens pairs to represent the ACT at the Interstate competition, the Australian National Congress (ANC). This year the ANC is being held in Orange, and the interstate component runs from July 7th to 11th.
As these teams are representing CBC, BFACT (the ACT state body) will pay the team entry. In addition the teams usually receive a small subsidy.
Advanced Bridge Series
The next Advanced Bridge Series is on Slam bidding using keycard and splinters. Who can confidently bid a splinter without blinking?
If you and your partner lack the courage or faith to bid splinters, come along on 3rd of March. It will cover:
- Using keycard and splinters to improve your slam bidding and judgement.
- Advanced Declarer play techniques to help you make your slams.
Will Jenner-O'Shea's Workshop
The next workshop run by Will Jenner will be on Saturday March 23rd -10am to 3pm. The topic to be covered is "Defence Techniques Card Placing and Counting Tricks".
Morning tea, light lunch and notes are included in the cost of this workshop.
