President's Message
For those who have been asking, the recent Fundraising event for the Under 26 Women’s Team which was held to support Zara and Diya for their airfares and accommodation was very successful and raised a healthy $2032.00. All the funds raised to date now go into a “shared pool of funds” which has been received from around the country (and overseas) and will be split between all six members of the team. We want to thank all members again for their support and generosity, and thanks to Liam, Zara & Diya for those amazing scones (150 of them) which were enjoyed by all!
We hope everyone has noticed the change in the temperature in the Barry Turner room over the last week! It’s like being in the Bahamas (in winter)!!! Big thanks to our hard working House Committee - Nick, Steve & David who have persevered to ensure the comfort of all our members 😊
This coming Monday is a Public Holiday, AND a reminder the Club WILL BE OPEN. Hopefully we will see all of our “younger” members coming along for a game of bridge on their day off!
Mentoring in May is now officially over and again it has proven to be very popular. Thank you to everyone who participated in the program this year, we hope you enjoyed the experience. Big thank you to our mentors, and our hard working managers as it is impossible to put the program together without your support. AND, special thanks goes to Rob Hurst who took on the task of organising the mentoring this year!
If you participated in the program and have some comments - positive or negative - I’m sure Rob would like to hear from you at
Happy bridging!
Mary

Cancer Council Biggest Morning Tea
The Cancer Council's Biggest Morning Tea is an annual event that brings communities together over a cuppa to raise funds for cancer research, promotion and support services.
Canberra Bridge Club is hosting a morning tea on Tuesday, 18 June from 11 am. Come along, bring a plate if you like baking and want to share your treats, and stay to play.
If you are not staying to play, come for a chat, a cuppa, delicious baked treats and to assist in raising some funds to help make a difference for those affected by cancer.
Book Lovers Lane
My name is Sara and I manage a bookshop at the Fyshwick Markets called Book Lovers Lane that is run by Lifeline Canberra.
We have received a donation of about 100 bridge books most from the first half of the 20th century. The authors include Ely Culbertson, W Dalton, Milton C Work and AE Manning Foster.
They will be going out for sale this Thursday and will be all on one table if you are interested in purchasing any.
Book Lovers Lane is open Thursday – Sunday from 9am – 4pm. If you have any questions, please let me know 😊
Warm Regards,
Sara Bojé (m 0425 757 608)

RealBridge Promotion - Bring a Buddy
OMG – it’s about to get cold!
Yes! Wintie is coming fast and staying at home in a warm house is sometimes very appealing. But what about my bridge game, I hear you say.
Not to worry - the club has four sessions of RealBridge available each week on Monday evening at 7.00pm and Monday, Thursday and Saturday afternoons. And the Tuesday competition night moves to RealBridge from the end of June until the end of August.
To encourage our reluctant and slightly scared members to give the RealBridge platform a whirl, we are offering a reduced rate of $6 per session for any member willing to give it a go. What’s more, their partner also pays $6 regardless of their RealBridge playing situation. The offer is also valid for members introducing non-members as guests to RealBridge. RealBridge newbies without a partner can also log on to Realbridge session 15 minutes before start and we will organise a partner for you. This promotion will apply throughout the month of June and is available for up to three sessions in June per member or guest.

TIP OF THE WEEK
Masterpoints. 1:Green points
Every member of a bridge club has an ABF number. The number is used by the Australian Bridge Federation for the award of masterpoints. “What are masterpoints”, you may ask. The simple answer is that they are a measure of your achievements at the bridge table.
Nearly every daytime session at our club is a green point event. Green masterpoints are awarded to approximately half of the field. If you play in a ten-table movement, the top five pairs in each direction get masterpoints. (But if there are nine tables, only the top four pairs in each direction get masterpoints.)
The formula for awards is quite simple. If you are first in your direction in a ten-table movement, you and your partner each get 0.30 green masterpoints, i.e., 10 (= no. of tables) x 0.030. If you are second, you get one-half of the points awarded to the winners, i.e. 0.15 points; if you are third, you get one-third, i.e. 0.10 points; fourth gets 0.08; fifth gets 0.06.
As soon as newcomers to bridge move from lessons to supervised play, they are eligible for masterpoints awards. However, awards are halved for supervised play.
I will write more about green points in coming TIPS OF THE WEEK. Indeed, I can go on and on about masterpoints. If you become bored, please don’t hesitate to email me.

PS: Our Club Manager Elizabeth Yoo and her partner Anita Delorenzo won last Wednesday evening's duplicate. "So what" you might say, " they are good players". Well, just look at this! Sitting N/S in a 7-table movement, they scored an amazing 78.17%. Even more amazing (very rare indeed) is it was the only above-average score in their direction. Congratulations, Elizabeth and Anita. JB

Lighter Moments
- How do snowmen buy birthday presents? With cold, hard cash.
- What did the tree say after a long winter? What a re-leaf!
