Vale Nick Ware
We are sad to report that Nick passed away last week. Nick was involved with bridge in the ACT, and the precursors to the CBC, since the early 1970s. He introduced his son Griff to the game in the 1990s, and Nick was an active bridge player up until the start of the pandemic, most recently being a regular partner of Judith Anderson. He was a kind man and will be sorely missed.
The funeral service for Nick will be held in the Chapel of Norwood Park Crematorium, Sandford Street, Mitchell on Thursday,
18 July 2024, starting at 12 noon.
In lieu of flowers please donate to either of the charities Dementia Australia or Bush Heritage Australia.
The service will be livestreamed. For any memories you wish to share about Nick: Griff would much appreciate it if you could please email them through to
Introduction to Teams!
Time is running out to register for the upcoming introduction to teams event on two consecutive Friday nights – July 19th and July 26th From 6-45pm until 9-30pm.
We currently have ten teams entered, many of whom have never tried teams before. If you are available on both nights, we would strongly encourage you to get involved and try this fun alternative way to enjoy bridge at the club.
Unlike standard pairs sessions, teams events cannot easily accommodate walk ins, so it is essential that anyone planning to attend register via the below email (including the names of all four members of your team). You can’t just turn up on the night!
If you are interested in playing as a pair but do not have team mates, please email as soon as possible and we will endeavour to find suitable team mates for you.
This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.
Similarly, if you have any questions or require clarification, please feel free to email or to speak to Steve Geddes at the club.
TIP OF THE WEEK
Do you know? 1
(West) Declarer
- AQ532
(East) Dummy
- T987
The correct way to play this suit, assuming you can afford one loser, is to cash the ace, enter dummy and lead towards the queen. Only when North holds three or four to the king/jack do you lose two tricks
Do you know? 2
(West) Declarer
- AJ32
(East) Dummy
- K954
To guarantee three tricks, the correct way to handle this suit is to cash the ace and then lead the two towards dummy, covering North's card as cheaply as possible. If North discards, go up with dummy's king and lead towards the jack-three.

Youth Day
The next Youth day with Will Jenner-O’Shea will be held on Sunday, 21 July from 11:00am - 1:00pm at the Canberra Bridge Club. If any members have children/grand-children/nieces/nephews who wish to learn to play bridge please let them know. These sessions are available to anyone under 30 for free. And, if there are “Youth” who are not too far on the other side of 30, please let them know as they will also be very welcome, and it’s always a fun time!
Immediately after the Youth finish on Sunday, the Club is running another advanced lesson - from 1:30-4:00pm. The more experienced Youth players are very welcome to stay on for that lesson and may do so for no charge.
Please contact Mary

Lighter Moments
In the forest, the animals, bored, decide to organize a joke competition.
To avoid terrible jokes, they set a rule: the old turtle will be the judge, and if she doesn't laugh, the contestant will be decapitated.
The proud lion tells a joke about a lascivious rabbit. The audience bursts into thunderous laughter, but the turtle remains stoic, and the lion is decapitated.
Then it's the monkey's turn, who tells a joke about hiding from hunters. Everyone doubles over in laughter, but the old turtle doesn't crack a smile. The monkey is decapitated.
Next up is the hippopotamus, who starts a joke about a gang of buffalo. Midway through, the old turtle bursts into laughter, bending over and compulsively tapping its shell, saying,
"That rabbit joke was fantastic!"
The joke above sums up neatly how my bridge is going at the moment.
See you back home everyone!
Elizabeth.
