Message from the President

On Tuesday we celebrated our afternoon session with some bridge, bubbles, prizes and then watched “The Race” followed by some more bridge! The afternoon was enjoyed by all who attended (except for those who lost on their sweeps….)

As always there are lots of people to thank. Barbara Bialowas for organising the event and providing the yummy treats on the day. Janet Kahler, Liz Van Der Hor and Sue Game for the preparation and running of the sweeps.

And of course to Steve for ensuring the session ran on time so everyone could stop and enjoy the race.

Prizes awarded:

• Most Elegantly Dressed - Julie McPhail
• Best Co-Ordinated (a vision in pinks from head to toe) - Christine Hobbs
• Best Dressed Male (the very dapper) - Will Jenner-O’Shea

Many thanks to everyone involved for another successful day.

- Mary

John Brockwell's Column

What can go wrong?

Your trump suit is (west) K8643 opposite (east) AQ92 and you must play the suit for zero losers. You have plenty of entries. What is your thought process?
You must ask yourself what can go wrong. If the outstanding trumps are 2/2 or 3/1, it’s elementary. So, consider the 4/0 break. If the south hand has the outstanding JT75, you can’t do it. (South merely splits the honours whenever you lead low towards the King and must make a trick.) But if north has the JT75, you can do it. But you must play the cards in the right order. So, start with the King. When south shows out, you then take the double finesse against the JT and bring in the suit for zero losers.
Why pose this problem? Well, this combination cropped up recently in a national tournament. In the open field, 6 out of 13 got it right. In the mixed field, only 3 out of 20 declarers were successful. In the restricted field, every declarer went wrong.
How would you have fared?
