Vale Margaret Fanning

It is with great sadness I have to report the passing of one of my favourite partners, Margaret Fanning on Sunday 23 February 2025. Margaret was a long standing member of the Canberra Bridge Club but to my regret, I only started playing with her about five years ago.
Margaret had a very acute mind and she was a thoughtful player. Once upon a time I think she was considered to be a rather slow player but this was because she thought about every possibility. As she developed more confidence in her judgement, which was always good, she started playing a lot faster. I admired how, as an older player, she picked up ideas with ease. Concepts such as Checkback which often flummox more experienced players did not faze Margaret.
I don’t know much about her life away from bridge but I do know that Margaret was a senior public servant and was highly regarded. She was also the Inaugural President of the Griffith/Narrabundah Community Association and was one of the founding members of the Inner South Canberra Community Council.
I enjoyed her company and her calm presence at the bridge table. She was an introvert but she seemed to enjoy my chatter and liveliness. I will miss her greatly.
A celebration of her life, contribution to her family, local community and Australia will be planned for a few weeks’ time in Canberra.
