Bring a Buddy Extended
Didn't get organised in time to do this in June? Introduce someone new to one of our regular RB sessions (Monday 2pm, Monday 7pm, Thursday 2pm and Saturday 1.15pm) and you can both play for half price! Valid for 3 sessions in July 2024. Call the director so you don't get charged full price.
Introduction to Teams!
Canberra Bridge Club will be running a short teams bridge competition, designed for people with little or no experience in teams play. Although there will be guidance provided for those new to the Teams format, the event is also open to those who have played teams before.
Ideally, people will enter as a team of four consisting of two partnerships, available on both evenings. However, if you and your partner are looking for team-mates, please send an email ASAP and the club will endeavour to match up others with similar needs.

TIP OF THE WEEK

Long, long ago, legendary Canadian tournament director, Doug Townsend, said “Bridge is a game for ladies and gentlemen”. Today, his words sound old-fashioned ─ but they remain nice words. And why not? There are few games where players can exchange courtesies. We should be proud that bridge is one of them.
Bridge whist, popular around the 1900s, was a forebear of contract bridge. The exposure of dummy was probably introduced in bridge whist. Perhaps the custom of thanking partner as dummy was spread originated in a refined setting such as London’s Portland Club. It doesn’t much matter. The courtly custom has persisted for more than a century.
Like most other things in bridge, there is a protocol in acknowledging the dummy. Always use the same words ─ “Thank you, Partner”, or the like. Never ever show delight or dismay by the spoken word or facial expression. Always be courteous. Always remember “Bridge is a game for ladies and gentlemen”.
PS: One of Australia’s greatest players never acknowledged the dummy. A thorough gentleman in every other way, this curious habit diminished his bridge just a little.

Cootamundra Congress (Sat 24 Aug) and Interclub Teams (Sun 25 Aug)
This year Cootamundra is hosting the BFACT Interclub teams on Sunday 25 August. The Canberra Bridge club can send teams in the categories listed below:
Novice (<100 per player), Restricted (<300 per player), Intermediate (<750 per player) and Seniors (you know if you are senior) categories. Multiple teams per club per category are allowed.
In Addition, Cootamundra has a one day Swiss Pairs event on the Saturday 24 August open to all players.
Monaro Bridge Club Congress
Monaro Bridge Club is pleased to announce that we are to have our first Bridge Congress in many years. We would love to see as many surrounding clubs and other clubs as possible join us for this event.
